On Monday, the New York Jets‘ chances of clinching the Super Bowl took a significant hit as sportsbooks recalibrated their odds in response to Aaron Rodgers’ injury. Caesars Sportsbook, for instance, adjusted the Jets’ Super Bowl odds from 16-1 to 35-1, while other bookmakers made even more drastic alterations. Despite their thrilling overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills on Monday, the Jets found themselves facing steep odds of 65-1 to win the Super Bowl at FanDuel on Tuesday.
The setback occurred when Rodgers suffered a potentially serious Achilles tendon injury early in the first quarter of Monday’s game. Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh informed reporters that Rodgers would undergo an MRI on Tuesday, characterizing the injury as “not promising.”
Initially, the Jets had been pegged as 3-point underdogs for their Week 2 clash against the Dallas Cowboys, but following Rodgers’ injury, the betting line was adjusted, with the Cowboys now favored by 7.5 points.
In a commendable move, DraftKings chose to credit customers who had placed bets based on Rodgers’ statistical performance against the Bills. These customers received bonus bets equal to their original stakes, including any parlays involving Rodgers.
Saleh also announced that Zach Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft, who replaced Rodgers on Monday, would be the Jets’ starting quarterback moving forward. Wilson, despite holding an 8-14 record as a starter and being demoted twice last season, was brought back into the spotlight after the Jets made a blockbuster offseason trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire Rodgers.
Throughout the offseason, the Jets had been a popular choice for Super Bowl bets. Prior to the season’s commencement, more bets had been placed on the Jets to win the Super Bowl, and more money had been wagered on them than any other team at PointsBet. Caesars Sportsbook even cited the Jets as their largest liability in Super Bowl odds.
Before Rodgers’ injury, only six teams boasted better Super Bowl odds than the Jets at Caesars Sportsbook. However, by Tuesday morning, with uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future, 13 teams had surpassed the Jets in the odds rankings.
